You know for a guy constantly mad about this stuff it always strikes me as unthinkably bizarre that it’s real and people seriously believe it and I can find it in the wild—I’ve been so immersed in woke Catholic books and history that certain things now obvious to me are just unthinkable to others
This might be wishful thinking but I consider myself decently plugged in to the world here and I think US Catholicism might actually be uniquely diseased—even the French have just as many lib sodalities or whatever as Latin Mass chapels afaict
This is what I was going to chime in with. American Catholicism is absolutely not the ONLY flawed version of the faith, but it certainly is very unique in some of its flaws, particularly diving head-first into "culture war" drivel.
Absolutely. When my savior comes I want to be caught helping to build a more Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive kingdom. I will take that to the fucking bank
my totally "source: I made it up" guess is that that wasn't the origin, but the association was definitely being made at the beginning of that phrase coming into broader use (outside black american contexts). the year michael brown was killed, some people put together a "woke advent" online/
devotional (?), like with daily excerpts from black activists and antiracist texts alongside commentary explicitly connecting it with the "therefore stay awake" themes of advent and the overarching christian call to justice.
tbc I'm certain that connection was being made *well before* that point, that's just when I know for a fact/from seeing it at the same time the terminology spread into broader use.
this is bizarre to me because i feel like 20 years ago we'd be getting the whole youth pastor "TRUE wokeness is found in the gospel" approach of cultural engagement from this same crowd, but the polarization process is complete now
true in most cases, i'm sure (i was not a catholic 20 years ago, extrapolating from my own experiences as an evangelical). still, i do think the rhetorical shift is troubling
