With separate legislation, nature risks paying the price for the net zero transition - for example when forests are cut and burnt for electricity
We need joined-up legislation
But much of the damage is already done, stopping declines isn't enough - we must aim higher!
So 2️⃣ the #CANBill seeks to reverse the loss of nature, and restore it towards its former health
3️⃣The #CANBill is much more holistic, focusing on the "health, abundance, diversity and resilience of species, populations, habitats and ecosystems"
But nature is irreplaceable - the only way to replace a 200 year old tree is wait 200 years
4️⃣ The #CANBill prioritises avoiding the damage, using the Conservation & Mitigation Hierarchy
5️⃣ The #CANBill brings it up to date and realigns our targets with our global obligations, based on the latest carbon budgets
It's a cumulative problem, and what matters is how much we emit in the meantime
