Thank you! The keynote talk was in May 2023, but the published version of it was published a few months later. But it’s something I and many others critical scholars from the Global South have talked about for some time. It has come up as sources of frustration for us at climate negotiations

Given the crap on TV and newsagents' shelves, I'd say that a majority of western publics have bought into it - bought into it decades ago. Changing such an ingrained societal behaviour will take decades and/or a global shock, such as nuclear war. Not even LA celebs on fire will change them.

I suppose what I'm really saying is that much of the blame belongs with the ordinary people: the masses. We should blame the super rich. But we should blame ourselves more for facilitating them over the last two millennia.

It's where leaders are supposed to lead. Whatever happened to the days when a tribe's leader took responsibility for the tribe's survival? Something went very wrong on the Cold War era. It's also quite universal: much of SE Asia and Latin America is in thrall to celeb status and the allure of riches

The wealthiest 1% are not super rich, though. One needs $1 million to qualify. A house and a pension and some savings would be enough.

You mean, the poorest of the wealthiest 1% are not super rich. Top 1% also includes multi-billionaires, so it may have been more productive to focus on the top 0.5%, or 0.1%.
