This project builds upon our team's earlier work showing that explicit prompts to think about God increased financial generosity, even across religious lines. Here, we asked whether this would hold when conflict was made salient. Even though conflict salience reduced generosity, the God effect held!

This work begs for a nuanced view of religion—as both an identity and belief system—particularly when it comes to intergroup relations. In short, we find that religion, the identity, seems to reduce cross-group prosociality, but religion, the belief (in God at least) can do the opposite.

Congrats, good to see this published! :) we found a similar effect when manipulating whether a group membership is based on morality vs not. I expected more hostility in morality-based groups but instead found more cooperation, including across group lines.
