I think vanilla acquired the connotation of plainness because of the fake vanilla that mass market vanilla ice cream is flavored with. Real vanilla definitely has a rich and complex flavor profile.
Had a look into this, the interesting thing I found is that artificial vanilla is chemically exactly the same, but it’s all the byproducts from a real harvest that factor into the flavourful complexity of the real shit, vanilla is awesome
vanilla is good, I would think it became the ‘basic’ flavour because it’s so good that everyone likes it? basics generally are good and versatile and well liked
It's possibly my favorite flavor ever! I like chocolate, don't get me wrong, but I'd pick vanilla over chocolate any day. Same with peanut butter, or just about any other flavor.
it comes from the pods of a tremendously sensitive, delicate tropical orchid whose flowers must be pollinated by hand in order to make them grow… one truly must sit unthinkingly upon the spoils of centuries of empire in order to taste it and say “eh, whatever”
this is true, though one wonders how often the average vanilla hater is actually tasting the pods of a delicate orchid as opposed to the artificial flavouring that’s in much wider use and missing most of the subtleties

Most people have never had it, though.
All they know is the mass produced cheap stuff.
I don't blame folks for disliking that bland artificially flavored mush.
