Wolfteam's passions were clear: they wanted to make interactive anime. you see this from their 80's FMV output through Tales of Phantasia. it's very apparent here, where cutscenes are lovingly put together and the gameplay... is... not without its inspirations...

it's simultaneously frustrating and hilarious to play. every successful swing or well timed roll is offset by Earnest getting juggled to death by worms, or drinking sleepy juice and getting harassed into a spike pit by bats.

nothing quite handles as you'd expect. where as in most games a basic attack with a whip would be thrown from the shoulder, Earnest starts from his hip - flopping his whip 225 degrees around his body and back.

there's some good variety to the level design, but the latter bunch in particular don't do much to take advantage of the game's more unique mechanics, like climbing or swinging (notably, neither mechanic works well so it evens out).

the cutscenes are lovely. cute character designs, exaggerated expressions, a fun mix of adventure movie cliches and 80's/90's anime stylings.

it's an endearingly messy game, and I thoroughly enjoyed the hour and a half I spent with it
