After Guy Fawkes, the man who planned to blow up Parliament in 1605.

Effigies of Fawkes are known as GUYS. The word came to refer to ugly-dressed people, and then to men in general.

The name GUY comes from Old French, from the Germanic root *WIDUZ "wood." Compare Italian GUIDO.
