How does a battle at a hospital last 2+ weeks if the other side (aka: Hamas) was not in there fighting back and using civilians (patients, doctors and staff) as human shields?

If it were truly just civilians, the “battle” would have lasted a few days at most.

Palestinians. Hamas only cares about Hamas.

Hamas loves death and martyrdom. Hamas routinely uses civilians and civilian infrastructure (like hospitals) to shield themselves.

Palestinians are starving? Not Hamas! They are well fed. Hamas hoards humanitarian aid.

Although you say there's "no clarity on how many of those killed may be civilians or suspected fighters", you must have some idea, right? Surely it would be obvious if the number of fighters was zero, as some readers assume. Israel claims 200 fighters killed, 900 captured — did you follow that up?

The hospital Israel torched would normally be the center for counting Palestinian deaths in the area. There are no other counts, and Israel's claim that no civilians were killed is not credible.

What about Israel's claim that it killed 200 fighters and arrested 900 suspects? The NPR article says that "Israeli commandos besieged" the hospital for "two weeks". A siege implies defenders: who were the defenders and why were they assembled there? This is basic journalism.

Well, apparently there was a significant siege at al Shifa. Surely that's relevant, but nobody the reporters spoke to is prepared to say what the casualties were doing there.

I don't think it's hard to figure out what the doctors and staff and patients of the hospital were doing in the hospital, or what women and children were doing sheltering in homes.

I genuinely can't find in the article whether or not Hamas was hiding in the hospital (beyond perhaps their wounded). It's a very important distinction whether or not they were using human shields here to determine if this attack was remotely justified..
