From Emilia Pérez and its 13(!) nominations to the profoundly gross The Substance getting a Best Picture nod, the 2025 Oscar nominees addressed big social and political issues, all to varying degrees.

I saw in an article that part of his speech directed at business leaders was to build in the US or face tariffs. He just never understands how his import tariffs work. Those business leaders don’t care if we have to pay tariffs on their products.
I really liked Emilia Perez, but I don’t understand why it has received 13 Oscar nominations. It wasn’t THAT good, IMO. I feel like it’s notoriety has more to do with its transgender/transitioning subject matter than anything else.
How? None of the actors could sing in Emilia Pérez and it was poorly written. Also, Adrian Brody having his voice fed through Ai to achieve the accent is egregious. The bar is apparently in hell.
Agreed
The Brutalist is very overrated
Watched it at the theater and sat the end wondering why people are hyping it so much
And Emilia Perez was just awful in so many ways, not to mention super problematic
I'd LOVE to see Demi Moore and Coralie Fargeat win the Best Actress and Best Director Oscar for "The Substance"! That movie floored me like no film has done in a long time. Such a brilliant movie.
Yes well deserved! I don’t see it as social political issues. These are Human rights issues we all should be sharing to make our planet a better place.
People needs to see human empathy right now. American empathy has died in the right wing of our country.
If The Substance were a better film I would get the nominations. Bold? Yes. Ambitious? Yes. Well executed and clever? No. Very weakly constructed with a gross out that lacked the artistry of Lynch or style of David Cronenberg.
I thought it was very obvious from the initial shot of Elizabeth’s walk of fame star. Of course a cracked, dirty version of the same shot is coming. Messaging and what the film is commenting on is dead on. The gross out diverts from how weak the rest is.
I think my hobby over the next 4 years will be calling out media that impose their opinions on us. So NPR, please refrain from the use of language like "profoundly gross" in your tags. Your job is to give us facts, not your views of them. I'll decide for myself, thank you.
Of the movies that seem to be favored with nods, the Substance was the one I enjoyed the most. Unfortunate that Angelina Jolie did not get nominated because she was excellent in 'Maria'.
#wicked was the worst I have seen in years. The costume design was horrible. The singing was OK. The acting OK. Good thing i had my phone and my ear pods.

Rare is the movie I don’t watch all the way through, but this movie was so boring I had to fight myself a handful of time just to finish it.
