A man who was arrested with over 100 dogs and equipment at his Georgia home got the maximum sentence last week. Prosecutors hope it sheds light on the prevalence of dogfighting, a felony in the U.S.

I live in Georgia. Shelters have to screen people who adopt because it is often believed that they will use the pit bulls for fighting, or small cats and dogs as bait. It is far more rampant than it has any right to be. The laws on the books have gotten stricter, but the bloodlust still exists.
I have rescued two dogs from fighting situations and fostered a momma to have her pups after a guy was arrested for the second time in a year with 100+ dogs. I love these big, dumb, danger goofs, but ownership comes with responsibility. And crimes like this go unpunished.
Such a terrible heinous thing to do to any animal. Barbaric. From my days as a Vet Tech I know first hand the physical and psychological toll this takes on an animal. If you want to fight so badly start your own FIGHT CLUB.

No worries. If he’s white, 45 will pardon him and put him in charge of the Humane Society. (I know he doesn’t have authority to do that, but that hasn’t stopped him so far.)

475 years? Is that enough? I have other thoughts about the sentencing and the punishment that will send a very clear message and stop all the dog fighting in there tracks.

I LOVE how dogs are valued and protected more than women and children in the US. Not diminishing how horrifying this is, but damn being below a dog in the place you call "home" sure feels like...something.
Also, the perpetrator was a Black man, so of course he faced severe consequences. Plenty of wealthy white men do the same. Only they are allowed to exploit others.
Pits, staffies are my 1st love. I'm guessing another proof of "prevalence" may be dog shelters overrun with pits who failed. They've made them unsociable but not mean enough for their purposes. Too many beautiful dogs in shelters with adoption restricted to 1 dog household.

My local shelter are so hesitant to let people adopt pit bulls because they say they always come back to the shelter, worse off, from dog fighting. Almost 75% are some sort of pit mix.

I mean, he absolutely deserves punishment, but 475 years? Rapists and murderers get far less time. I think 10 years would be sufficient to send a message. This sentence is not proportional when taking other crimes into account.
People who engage in dogfighting should get the death penalty. Such people are wholly unfit to be in a society. They are one step away from becoming serial killers, or police officers....
