The Department of Education told schools to stop DEI efforts or risk losing federal dollars. The president of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation warns it won't be quick and easy.

Good to see that the president of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation isn't rolling over. According to the article she says, "we must remember that it is guidance and not the law."
If it’s like how other institutions have complied with this directive, they will stop any mention of anyone not white males. “Women” is a word they consider divisive. So, no women’s bathrooms, no sorority mentions, no minority anything, no summer training research programs, etc.
That'll force schools get far from government if they find funds from else funders&is purely another IQless move from the government! In history, every government getting corrupted by toxic levels of far right always made such DUMB actions to quicken their detoriation process on way to lose power!
So schools can only teach about white men? The one demographic that has caused nothing but turmoil and destruction since leaving Europe? Does anyone not remember there is a whole internet to access information? Just another way to keep the populous dumb and controllable
Exactly. I work at one of the largest public universities in America. Plans are being made to bend the knee to Trump and Elon, as if proactively cowering to them will protect us from their plans to dismantle public education.
In the coming weeks, I expect us to:
- Sunset social justice & human rights degree programs.
- Graduation ceremonies such as the Hispanic convocation, will be no more.
- Leadership is drafting a list of words that will be removed from all school properties, websites, etc (words such as ‘equity’)
Forcing schools to not teach certain things s also control. Forcing schools to teach religion or post Ten Commandments to teach from the Bible is control.
It’s all about money and power. They don’t want the masses educated. They are easier to control that way and there’s more money in the oligarchs’ pockets.
Withholding government money and prosecution if they discriminate in ways that violate civil rights laws. But that was always the case for schools that discriminate on the basis of race.
It would have been good to have noted that:
1. this is not federal law.
2."Dear Colleague" letters don't have that power.
3. the person being interviewed was incorrect when she spoke of higher ed reviewing "if any of their programs are violating the law"
Yeah, well, who needs an educated populace anyway? We can just obey our dear leader and be fine, I'm sure of it. He's the smartest, most stable genius President ever. Let him do the thinking. If he thinks DEI is bad for education, he must be right.
It's time to stop the Senile President & his Gang of Broligarch THUGS from destroying our country. They're driving down the education of our children, the quality of our government agencies, and killing our farms and businesses!
This racism has gone in for 30 days. It's enough.
Minorities and women are not incompetent. And minorities and girls of all colors deserve an education.
We all pay for the school system..
It's time for gop to stop claiming it's their right to discriminate our children in schools we all pay for!!
Heard about this yesterday! So the Radical Facist republican regime prefer THE SAME, and unequal and not inclusive.. these same people then supposedly preach values?! Wow Marjorie Traitor Greene and Dictator Don truly due hate!
Bet there won’t be too much DEI attention to college football and men’s bb programs. That would backfire in a few years with the another bunch in the billionaire boys club, NFL and NBA owners.
I don’t think these leaders understand what happens in education. In public elementary schools, inclusion refers to special ed students being in the same classroom as general ed students. So, in two weeks they would like us to segregate special ed students into separate classrooms??
I don’t think they actually want us to separate special ed students, but I do think that they use words like “inclusion” without understanding what it means, or how it is used in education, or how their new policies would actually play out in a school.
So women who run schools, teach, recruit, and hire are suppose to ban the recruitment of men, abandon all the efforts to recruit more males in the classrooms where boys are falling behind in college enrollment. DEI effforts goes both ways. Recruiting for "targeted occupations" means reaching beyond.
When affirmative action was struck
down, we had to pause admissions for a good while to adjust and comply. I fear a similar problem here. This has real world impact on universities and students alike.
It’s a fig leaf to curry favor with the rubes and then a cudgel to take Federal dollars to destroy public education so they get more rubes to control with propaganda.
Hi! Republican here. We don't like using race as a factor in hiring or admissions. Whether you're excluding Blacks or Jews in the 20th Century or excluding Asians as Ivy League schools do in the 21st Century, that's un-American.
If you have any serious questions, I'd be happy to answer them. 🙂
Why do you think is the reason that a lot of republican politicians, right wing media heads, and the like use the term DEI solely in response to people of color in positions and not towards people with disabilities, veterans, or other minority groups?
I think Republicans, and people in general, don't like the DEI movement's race preferences and assigning a person's value based on their race. And modern American racial theory assigns race to EVERYONE, even though those racial assignments can be arbitrary. /1
As if Pakistani-Americans and Hawaiians were similar. So DEI racial preferences affect more people, which is why it gets more notice. Discrimination against vets and people with disabilities is also reprehensible, but the DEI movement gives the impression of being more focused on race. /2
They want to be able to point at something they don't like and say that that person didn't earn their spot because [insert reason here]. The thing is that in almost every instance of it being used like that lately, it has been towards a person or color, or a person that doesn't follow gender norms.
For the conservative movement and the right wing of politics, it unfortunately became yet another buzzword they could toss around. Just like political correctness and CRT. They don't have an understanding of what it stands for, and that is the point.
It is trying to work against historic practices of exclusion towards the minority groups. Which is why it's not in any way race based solely. Ethnic groups, gender-based groups, religious groups, disabled groups, veteran groups; all these fell under DEI.
The main thing is that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs were so that people in minority groups were not excluded from job offers because they were part of those groups. It was meant to be an equalizer because of attitudes towards employment that have been extremely slow to change.
Because they think helping the people who are behind inherently hurts the people in the lead, who are only there because they held back the other people in the first place. They use phrases like "reverse racism" to hide the cognitive dissonance.
You can't eliminate racism by applying racism in the opposite direction. You eliminate racism by brutally eradicating racism. Eliminate racist policies and institutions. Punish racist actions - regardless of the perpetrator's race (ie yes, even if he's white).
I’m saying that’s THEIR mentality. The ones doing this right now are white men who believe they are the only ones who should benefit from their race and gender. They believe they DESERVE it.
My only power in this situation is to raise young men who do no ascribe to this mentality
What is it with conservatives, that DEI terrifies them so much that they have to ban it?
What a bunch of snowflakes. What are they going to use for an excuse, when they don't get hired, after DEI has vanished? Most of the DEI haters are people who make bad employees because of attitudes/habits.
As a mother this saddens me to the core. My Daughter just finally after a year of fighting. Finally I was able to get her 504 Plan written up. This is her last year in Elementary school. I fear she will lose it.
Not ranking one race over another is actually the opposite of fascism. Fascists were obsessed with each person's ancentry. This executive order says to stop ranking people based on race.
If we are not allowed to have diversity, equity or inclusion in schools, what would a school look like? D: no one is allowed to be different from anyone else, E: somehow we have to make it unfair (like maybe you randomly take points off of people’s grades?) and I: no special ed students.
People can be different. The order says that we shouldn't give advantages or disadvantages based on race and we should comply with existing civil rights law. If you agree with that, you agree with the executive order.
It also says "Individual dignity, hard work, and excellence are fundamental to American greatness." Sound familiar to "Arbeit macht frei" both used to obfuscate more twisted goals.
But do the words diversity, equity and inclusion even correspond to their actual meanings in this context? Like the meaning they have in the dictionary? Or the way that we use them in an educational context, where inclusion means special ed students learning together with general ed students?
Nazis ranked everyone based on race. They said some races were inherently better than others. I don't think we should use race in school admissions. Do you?
If they cave on this, they will be threatened with losing Fed money over the next thing, and the next, until they lose it anyway. That's how blackmail and extorsion work.
"Principles" are only Principles if you uphold them under duress.
This is when people need to get together to meet greet and help each other. Homeschooling is going to be the only kind of education American kids can get that include genuine education and not brainwashing
Just saying, why should the tax payers foot the bill? They could have easily paid for their own subscriptions. Like normal people do. If I charged subscriptions to my boss at work, my arse would be out the door in a New York minute.
It’s not about whether media can be subscribed to, but which ones. The government can still subscribe to press, but only those that align with its own views. Critical voices like Economist, NYT, Reuters are being cut. This is not a cost-saving measure; it’s a targeted restriction of press diversity.
Some districts are already making budget plans in the case of no federal funding. It's not pretty. A district near me has rumored up to 20 furlough days and huge cuts to the support staff.
one of the "DEI" efforts identified in the eliminated DOE contracts to state education departments was "multilingual." they are literally cancelling funding because some people on earth speak more than one language.
in Carson v. Makin (2022), SCOTUS ruled that federal funding must be provided to private religious schools if states also provide funding to secular private schools
They will lose funding no matter what they do. Pay attention. Trump has declared that he wants the Department shut down. Don’t voluntarily pick up the harness and put it on.
Let’s ban empathy, basic human decency, amd respect. Let’s just make sure everyone is a robot of pure hate…..SMH this is not a United States I thought I’d ever see. The US wasn’t perfect but I thought I was starting to see more people just trying to be better humans now it’s about being the worst
DEI is an attempt to solve racism by applying racism in the opposite direction, but that only propagates it, furthers it, allows it to evolve and fester.
America has chosen to eliminate racism by eliminating racism. We have to get behind this and be sure it's enforced fairly.
Racism is a system of advantage based on race. It is a hierarchy. Racism is so deeply embedded within U.S. minds and U.S. society that it is virtually impossible to escape. US has not chosen to end it, but reinforce it.
DEI initiatives exist to address historical and systemic inequities that disproportionately affect racial minorities and other marginalized groups. Rather than banning DEI initiatives, the focus should be on improving them,
ensuring DEI programs are effective and impactful not just performative.
I agree that we need to root out and destroy systemic racism, which I believe definitely exists.
I believe there are also other social trends and factors affecting minorities that I wouldn’t necessarily put in the category of systemic racism, but that I’d love to see rooted out and addressed.
As a left leaning independent, I agree with you 100%, and in June of 2023, the SCOTUS agreed as well when it ruled against Harvard and UNC, and by default any school receiving federal funds that quotas, set asides, and or preferences based on race and/or gender were unconstitutional.

I guess we are no longer following the constitution.
Criminal Trump has declared himself king.
The corrupt Republican controlled Congress is allowing the destruction of our Democracy.

I don’t yet know the scope or the details, but it’s going to be grim.

C'mon NPR: this is irresponsible.
Ok, enough of that before I vomit.
Kick 'em out & send them home to Putin!!!
The president can’t leverage congressionally allocated funding in a way that violates the first amendment.
Minorities and women are not incompetent. And minorities and girls of all colors deserve an education.

Boom! No more DEI. Problem solved.
School: “Order? Or what?”
Gov: “Or we will take your money away”.
School: “So, you will punish us for expression?”
Gov: “Yes!”
School: “We have a 4th grade Social Studies class you need to attend. They are studying the constitution today.”
Meanwhile, Republican budget adds $25 trillion to the national debt.

Why have Elon and his pet Felon not made cuts or firings at the Pentagon?

If you do not wish to descriminate based on race, do not demand the right to do so.
No one is demanding the right to discriminate based on race except some schools.

Not really.

DEI=affirmative action= unconstitutional as it uses reverse racism to fight racism.
Oh. And it wasn't white students bringing the lawsuits. It was Asian students.
It's actually quite simple if you try.
Only white men can benefit unfairly from having connections and simply being white men.
(I know this does not apply to the entire demographic)
That's it.
Help us. Get on board.
My only power in this situation is to raise young men who do no ascribe to this mentality
Have you even LOOKED at President Trump's cabinet so far?
One of the most effective propaganda methods is to ascribe motivations and beliefs to the "bad guys"
"They only care about ..."
"She wants to ..."
"He thinks ..."
"They're trying to ..."
Start looking for this. You'll see it everywhere.
They will never admit that’s what they believe, but their actions prove that it is.
What a bunch of snowflakes. What are they going to use for an excuse, when they don't get hired, after DEI has vanished? Most of the DEI haters are people who make bad employees because of attitudes/habits.
Wake the f*ck up America.
And which races are the good ones?
"Principles" are only Principles if you uphold them under duress.
Why can't you people see that?
No way a government employee can do what a private sector employee can't do.
“And why didn’t you do anything back then, Grandpa?”
“My dear grandson, those were completely different times back then, you know, back in…”

Greetings from Germany and best of luck
