The carrier announced Tuesday that it will begin charging certain passengers to check their luggage on flights, a significant shift at the company long prized by consumers for its perks.

If you plan to visit a friend or relative for a short while, it's easier to simply ship your clothing to your destination and then back home again when you return.
I've already canceled my Southwest credit card because of the last changes. Now I'll just cancel my rewards account and Southwest accounts with them all together. This makes the just another white noise airline after everything that made them stand out is gone.
The unlimited credit thing was really nice too. Especially if you’re still working full-time and just don’t have the opportunity to travel as much as you’d like to.
it would also be nice to know, what they intend on charging so I can make appropriate travel decisions vs just doing away with something and not determining what that cost will be. no assigned seats, no free bags, I think this helps other airlines get biz more than it helps Southwest. IMHO
The Airlines didn't have bag fees until they needed a Tax Payer Bailout!! Originally, they said it was temporary, & now they just do it. GREED HAS CONSEQUENCES!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Between this and ending the open seating policy, there's differentiation between any other major airline now. They just became another commodity transportation service.
Just another corporation bowing to it's shareholders instead of it's customers. They stood out as unique by not charging for bags but no longer. Such a shame
It's time to start including what this charge is paying for in the headline, @npr.org. Southwest customers will be subsidizing a billion dollars in stock buybacks with these fees
the fact that, as consumers, what we value most is a free checked bag. now that we also get asked to contribute to carbon offsets when we buy our tickets, man...the airlines will never shy away from a way to squeeze a turnip.
They’ve been going downhill for at least 7 years. They used to be affordable, family friendly, tons of direct flights, and free bags. Nearly all of those options are gone.
They’re gonna shit when their sales plummet now cuz there’s no reason to prefer them over other airlines anymore. Just more corporate greed for the 1% trash.
This comes in response to activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management pushing for management changes at Southwest Airlines, including an end to the longstanding policies of free checked bags, a single-class cabin layout, and an open seating arrangement.
If planes keep falling out of the sky, we won't have to worry about the airlines charging a fee, because fewer of us will be flying. And increased baggage fees won't cover those losses.
It is the same recipe in the mass newstainment world. First it's free, then it comes with a subscription price, then with advertisement, then at a price if you don't want to be slapped with numerous advertisements, then at a higher price if you want to keep it that way.
That's really the only thing they had going for them and one thing I took into consideration when booking a flight with them compared to other airlines.
Now they're just another crappy spirit / frontier type airline. Their planes are old and gross and don't even offer anything that sets them apart.
Yeah. Better start planing vacations close to home. Hell make it a road trip and take the sight. More video conferences and meetings. Won't be long before that charge you based on your weight. No thank you.
Bags fly free and the lack of assigned seats (also being discontinued) is why I liked to fly Southwest. And their refund policy. I’m guessing that’s next to go.
The majority of people don't have employers who will cover their travel costs, making it unfeasible to continue to travel at all. All this does is reinforce the sneaking suspicion that commercial flights are losing their safety track record and reverting to become luxury expenses. That's sad.
So... Southwest *won't* charge the wealthier "Preferred" flyers "Business Select" (who likely *can* afford the extra fee) but totally *will* pass the buck along to fliers who probably don't have a ton of disposable income, thus purchasing cheaper tickets.

I wouldn't be surprised if on international flights they start serving us frozen meals and we'll have to wait in line to heat them up ourselves.
They could also add vending machines for drinks and make us pay to use the toilet.

Gotcha.
At least eggs are cheap right?
