I can't get that excited about my DNA (is some malefactor going to clone us?) but my billing information bothers me more. Still, I expect 23 and Me will be bought or merged with another genealogy business.
First request your data. It may take a month before you receive that. If you delete your data before receiving it, you will cancel your request. Hope this is helpful.
The US public needs to realize the terms they accept “by continuing” have signed away their data and privacy and right to sue their corporate masters who also write the bankruptcy laws that shield corporations and executives, who are free to move on to the next big shiny thing.
If it were a good tech company with good data policies, it would have a way to remove data on customer request. The right to be forgotten is a key requirement for services offered to EU consumers. Alas, not many companies have this or plans for it outside the EU, not even insurance companies.
They are... as long as the service is still operational, you can do so. Ok. So when they power it down, what happens to the data remaining? When they release the cloud assets, can any remaining data leak? What is the guarantee that the data you delete is actually deleted everywhere?
I don’t live in conspiracy theories. If you are a person concerned about this you likely never submitted your sample, and even if you did you likely keep up with news and will be proactive.
This isn't conspiracy theory stuff. This is stuff you typically have to worry about when building these things. When you delete, does your system delete the data or break the links? If it is cloud and it isn't deleted when someone else gets assigned the resources, will they get some data fragments?
The data is a problem but what about the actual samples? These services often do PCR to multiply the sample so they can do updated tests at a later date without you having to submit a new sample.
Calm down! There are very few places to get tested for genes that make you more susceptible to certain illnesses like the BRCA1 or 2 for breast cancer.
This is an important service! The question is whether names are attached to test results. I don't know that answer.
Privacy? What's that? In a world where top secret means texting on unsecured apps to avoid leaving a paper trail for subsequent court reviews like deportation without oversight.
There is at least a little grandiosity in those concerns, where people assume that their little bit of code is going to be so important as (1) to be useful, and (2) to be so in such a way as to find its way back into one's life in a harmful way. I do not think I am that special, unique, or targeted.
The funny is that subscriber’s DNA has already been monetized to every level possible - new company may have some hype and slightly more nefarious actions.
I never understood people sharing this data. They had to put a provision in the ACA saying genetic data can’t be used against you with premiums. Which is the only reason I allowed myself to be tested for known cancer genes when I was diagnosed with cancer. We need better regulation all around.

If not, this isn’t something you care about.
That’s independence
You mean before or after being sold to the highest bidder? 🤭
