Now that they’re porting games to PC consistently, PlayStation needs to implement play anywhere, just like Xbox. It’s nice being able to make one purchase and play on either platform, depending on mood or location. Likely will happen once Sony makes a PC storefront. - ThreadSky

That would actually be a good argument for the PSN sign-in requirements - keeping your saves and stuff platform independent. I do hope they do what you're saying, though. I think you're right that it's likely at some point.

I wouldn’t even care if the transfer costs money. Like they charge $10 if you bought the game on ps5 and want to get it on pc too. And then have the save transfer between them.

I like to own physical games but I like playing games on PC most. So that would give me an avenue to have a game sit on my shelf and also play on PC with better visuals and mod support. Would be a dream!

Yep! I’m the same way. I like physical games a ton but they’re rare on PC. Like the last game I got a physical disc for was last year and it’s an expansion to a Japanese MMO lol. Before that maybe 2012? 2011?

Honestly, I'd rather see them reconnect and work something out with Valve than strike out to make their own storefront. Buying Portal 2 on PS3 and getting it on Steam was great back in the day, even if that was likely a Valve initiative.

I have mixed feelings about a Sony storefront, given their history with digital libraries. I know where Steam stands. And Sony deleted my entire Funimation library, the moment it was inconvenient.

It won't happen as long as PlayStation is the vastly leading market leader. They are too comfortable to make big changes and rather just cash in on multiple sales cause they know it's a minority audience that plays PS next to something else.

Sony needs more incentive to be consumer friendly

I wouldn’t expect it this generation, but I do expect it to happen next cycle. I know quite a few people irl and online, as well as myself, intend to go PC and Nintendo next gen, since Xbox and PS 1st party go to PC now too. I suspect they’ll lose 10-20% to PC and may act then.

From what I've seen in Europe, a major part of PlayStation's userbase is casuals (which isn't a knock, it's normal for market leaders). I think a 10% drop is optimistic (depending on how you look at it).

And considering Sony's position, I'd see them doubling down on exclusivity over pc releases

I think the hit will primarily come from North America, as every single person I was referring to lives in the US or Canada. NA was the only stronghold for Xbox until they lost it this gen to PS and PC and I think next gen, PC will bump PS here too. Won’t happen in Europe. No way.

Can’t speak for everyone, but the most common points I hear are due to Xbox and PS exclusives coming to PC, PC providing more options for power, and PC consistently, albeit slowly, moving towards a more console-like experience. Also can still earn achievements and trophies on 1st party games.

But in Europe PlayStation will stay on top for a long while. I think it's the market where the biggest growth potential is fox Xbox, but they haven't made any significant moves to make that happen, so PS stays on top

This would be a fantastic move. And honestly even if they didn’t want to put in the time and effort to develop their own storefront, I’d be thrilled for them to sign licensing agreements with existing ones like Steam to achieve the same purpose.

I’m surprised they havn’t done it for games like helldivers 2 or last of series. The most I’ve seen sony do is offer a discount on newer version of old games u own on psn. I agree sometimes u wanna sit at a desk and sometimes u wanna just melt in the couch.

I feel like (and I could be totally wrong; I know nothing) Sony loves how exclusive it is. Xbox unfortunately isn’t nearly as popular - partly because of games not releasing to them. I don’t see Sony allowing PlayStation to be played anywhere. They like their bubble lol but I agree with you!

There was a survey a few years back (like 10 or so years ago) that said that Japanese gamers are far more likely to buy a console for a single game. Knowing Japanese companies, their first priority is usually the domestic market. They probably value their exclusivity.
