Depends what sort of things you wanna do and your budget! Nanaimo is a good for being central, you can day trip just about anywhere from there. Victoria would probably be more expensive as it's the most urban place here.

Awesome!
I'd recommend checking out the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, and Coombs for it's neat market (goats on the roof, and delicious donuts!)
Englishman River Falls is a nice walk/hike area with an awesome waterfall. Parksville has a killer beach/boardwalk/community park space!

Helpful for me too! We are headed there in a month. Two nights in Victoria and a week in Parksville. If you have any other suggestions for good food or whale watching, am all ears. :)

Food! I know mid island best:
Semi-fancy: the restaurants at Bayside Oceanfront Resort and Qualicum Beach Inn. Salt Pizzeria has great pizza. Fern & Cedar is an awesome pub with awesome burgers. The Black Goose is a cool place to go in Parksville! It has a cool old building.

Nanaimo’s gorgeous. If you get a chance to hit the coast try a whale watching tour - its kind of the perfect time of year for it.

If you make it to Uclulet, check out their aquarium! It's a catch and release, with all local wildlife!
