I live in Auckland and you could find opportunities to speak Samoan or Mandarin here easier than Māori. But there are some parts of the country where you hear Māori on the street.

I think that might be a generous estimate (maybe includes everyone who speaks any). But the public support and enthusiasm for learning it has increased a lot in recent years. It's promising!

That's awesome! My grandfather spoke Ladino, and recently there's been renewed interest in revitalizing it. It's very heartening to see interest in a language that's part of your heritage.

I already speak decent German, though I could work on actually gaining fluency, but yeah, in my experience they prefer to switch to English. The most luck I've had with practicing a language was when I went to Spain with my A2 level Spanish. Everyone there only wanted to communicate in Spanish.

That's interesting. I have almost no Spanish, but my partner learnt quite a lot from just a month in Cuba.
