This fight is going to be remembered a long time, either way. On paper Russia "won" the Winter War - but everyone remembers how that went down and Russians don't want to fight Finland again.

It's going to take Russia a long time to rebuild some of the lost capabilities from this war. Some, like the massive stockpiles of Soviet equipment, cannot be restored.

It is hard to imagine the strategic gains - assuming there are any - will be worth the cost.

It strikes me (pun intended) that we already have solutions to this: basic operational security. Even absent drones, we'd say there was a complete failure if somebody opened up with a concealed mortar next to the airbase.

To be fair, we probably don't exercise tight security on home soil.

I'm equally worried about how things get filtered down. We see the results that sloth, vice and apathy show in the Russian military model: a few showpiece units (that still can't fight) and decaying standards everywhere.

Firing capable top brass for not being white and male doesn't help.

There was some discussion of this style of attack a decade ago in the context of potential terror attacks, IIRC. The prospect is kind of terrifying. Fortunately the Ukrainians have been great about focusing on military/industrial targets.
