Art (and craft--not trying to start something; I'm just in something that blurs the lines, a lot) is one thing.
Commissions is a whole other thing.
Like an entirely different entity with marginal overlap and sometimes none.

I, also, won't take a job repairing another jewelry company's piece. I work in sterling, and I've had customers ask me to repair a beaded bracelet, or something in gold. My studio isn't fitted to work in those mediums.

I have friends that have their own jewelry businesses. They work hark to create unique pieces. The amount of times that someone morons whines that "'they could make that' without ANY knowledge of the time and training it takes, is astounding.

Speaking as someone who took up wire wrapping after being inspired by other crafters, it took a LOT of time and practice just to get to a point where my pieces are just decent. I still have a LONG way to go.

As such we're going to a model of price of item plus hourly rate of labor, and realistically, that starts at thirty dollars an hour minimum. If I was charging what my rate actually is, it'd be 80-100. Meg and Becky, higher.

I made a (gorgeous) moss agate and carnelian necklace for a (former) friend as a gift. She mailed it back to me with a diagram of how she wanted it to be restrung. (I’m a graphic designer, my necklace was better). I did restring it, and (for so many reasons) ended our 30 year relationship.

I used to sell my hand made jewelry and if I took a commission I had a contract for the customer to sign that included them agreeing to my “asshole tax” if they started demanding absurd things that weren’t feasible.

I design cups I put the image and font on computer screen send the client a picture before printing and either pressing image on cup or waterslide and epoxying over….after they give approval
