As I've said time & time again, the government sets fares. The methodology also uses Trainline which is the worst place to book rail fares, and because the piece compared flights and trains at very little notice will inevitability involve more expensive anytime / off-peak ticket vice advance.
HS2 = 1,000 seats/hr with a change in Birmingham.
GB trains haven't changed for 200 years. HS2 is the solution.
Madrid-Barca, Paris-London similar trips at half price nonstop - 1,000 seat trains.
HS2 = 2,000 seats/hr London-Edinburgh 1 stop = low fares.
