A glimpse of things to come. Perhaps future historians will see this as akin to the Battle of Camprai jn WW1. As AI gets better unmanned systems will begin to dominate. Land warfare seems the hardest to get right. I'll post more analysis in my account.
Oil depots and refineries in russia are on fire. Ukraine expanding war well into russia - and this expansion (fingers crossed) has systematic character. This is the main positive of the 2024 for me.
2/ The UGVs were apparently supported throughout the activity by FPV drones. While this doesnβt make the attack fully autonomous β the vehicles need human operators β it is one of the more significant examples of drone combat in this war.
3/ The Battle of Lyptsi is an important step in the transformation of the character of war from a purely human endeavour to something quite different in the 21st century.
4/ The battle is part of the leading edge of a much larger wave of military transformation that is about to wash over land forces around the world. My assessment of the trajectory of uncrewed land combat is now available. https://mickryan.substack.com/p/the-battle-of-lyptsi-robotic-land
Dec 2024 & the attack on Lyptsi may go down in the history books as the moment war changed forever. By necessity Ukraine is developing future war and doctrine without forgetting the human side of conflict.
No one wants Russia to win this war with this technological advantage.
I once heard that two past inventions changed war, gaving its owner an overwhelming advantage. Firearm and nuclear weapons. The speaker expected automated weapons to be the next game changer, as they are expendable. Looks like we'll know soon.

"With" ought to be "which".
"Scares" ought to be "scarce".
