First off, elephant in the room: I made the cover. Early in the process of putting together PoD, I had a vision for the project feeling exceptionally personal. I wanted to have my fingerprints all over this book.

As a reader, I’ve always felt that collections were the most authentic look at their authors. How often do we get to know someone from so many different angles? See their pet themes pop up again and again, slightly remixed.

I knew that with my collection, people would be—for better or worse—seeing a lot of me. They’d be seeing my wrestle with different anxieties, they’d witness glimpses of who I was growing up, they’d see my ego on every page.

Knowing all that—and embracing it!—I felt the only way to do this thing would be to put as much of myself into it as possible. So, it was an easy decision to do the cover myself.

The creative world has become increasingly depressing with the advent of generative art. I knew for a fact I didn’t want AI touching a project that was so deeply personal to me. So, while I’m not an artist, I thought that it’d be cool to do the art in spite of it.

Why? Because art is fun. It’s expressive. And I’d rather have something that looks weird and handmade than something with the soulless sheen of AI. So, I went to the store and got some acrylic paints and went to work in meatspace, painting canvas for the first time in my life.
