Back in 1975 when I was 13 I was given a 60 mm Japanese refractor for Christmas, and my memory is I could distinctly see the spiral structure of andromeda through it. Were the nights darker and my eyes better then? Or is my memory wrong?

I saw something simular in Texas as a kid. It was 20ft above me and I could here fizzle out and become dust.
