I think the colors were added to highlight different compositions of the crust.

Really, this is Mercury.

I aasume it always faces the Sun, otherwise the surface would be smooth, no craters.

Mercury is tidally locked to the sun with an orbital resonance of 3:2 (3 rotations on its axis- days, for every 2 revolutions- years)
