It's stunning the amount of personality defects we've seen on display from the US government this week, but of all of them the one that's causing the most active harm is "well I don't want to cause a scene."

I think a case could be made that allowing House districts to be constructed in such a way as to ensure they are "safe" for one party or the other has resulted in weeding out the need to strive and fight for the office in *many* representatives.
I had a supervisor (an apolitical person) who grew up in Lithuania under the Soviets. Years ago, I asked her about her impression of Americans. She thought a moment and said, “You are an extremely docile people.” So true.
America basically invented modern propaganda with the likes of Hearst and Pulitzer, and we've been bathed in it since birth ever since. We're not just docile, we're domesticated.
