The Borg.
Who forcibly change you. Where the best case scenario is to be turned back into what you were before and the second best is to die, and Shaw lost his whole crew to them.
No. No no no. Don't incorporate "deadnaming" into that.
"Deadnaming" is not a part of this. Jesus. No.
Of course, those actions are themselves a symptom of bad writing, of designing a Starfleet that apparently jettisoned counselors and doesn't bother to vet command personnel for abuse and trauma.
You're correct that it's bad writing, but it's not a matter of excusing Shaw. It's whoever decided to apply the idea of a deadname to the fucking Borg.
But every trans person saw someone's boss saying 'I'm going to call you by your legal name against your wishes and you have to put up with it'.
But she's always going to call herself Seven. It's always going to be her name.
(and maybe it would be good to have a few cloaked stealth-recon vessels to hand, y'know)
https://youtu.be/RHVQ2BckZn4 Starfleet doesn't WANT to save people from the Borg or Klingon, they want to explore space. They just do it because it's the right thing to do.
