I agree, if they want to shut down the servers they should release the files so someone else can host one of them if they want. I can't think of any reason not to.

There may be security issues with the server "as-is", but they could remove all that prior to release.

Personally I think games should also have to be released in a state that’s playable without patches, this whole ship now, fix later approach wouldn’t fly in any other market. As it is, this is a good starting point.
