5. The clothes at Costco are pretty good if you’re just looking for basic separates. The coats are reliable. And they just upheld their DEI programs, so give them your money!

6. Starbucks sucks. The best coffee (regular or artisanal) in Rochester is at Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters and Ugly Duck Coffee. Equal Grounds is also good.
Anywhere in the US, the best coffee will always be from local baristas, although you’ll find good basic coffee at local diners and eateries.
7. Just because a restaurant or eatery calls itself a diner doesn’t mean it is one. A diner is a prefabricated structure with counter service that has been hauled to its site. There are a lot of original diners remaining, especially in the Northeast. Seek them out. They’re worth it (remember coffee)
8. When you eat at those original diners, reliable standbys are hot dogs or hamburgers if you eat meat, grilled cheese or breakfast if you don’t (especially omelettes). Don’t skip dessert. They usually have excellent pie, often homemade. And again, coffee!
9. Cherish dogs. They are the epitome of pure love. But don’t pet them without asking their owners permission, and put your hand under their heads so they can smell you (and over their heads might scare them).
10. Get the apps for your favorite restaurants because they have deals you won’t see elsewhere. That’s why I can enjoy an Impossible Whopper for $3 on Wednesdays (they’re usually more than double that).
11. You’ll hear a lot of really great bands at smaller venues (like the Town Ballroom in Buffalo). They don’t have seating so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Dress in layers because it gets hot. And wear earplugs! Don’t be stupid the way we were 40 years ago.
