I can't speak for Mali, and I visited Chad under the aegis of African Parks, so we were very well supported. I'm not sure how confident I'd feel about travelling there independently. The region is intractably tense for a multitude of reasons!

Indeed. Tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees have been crossing the border since July, endemic food crises across the region, and an unprecedentedly destrustive monsoon (a subject adjacent to my piece) caused mass displacements this summer. Barely a squeak about any of it in western media.
Hopefully, in the future, tourism can play some part in helping boost economies, stability and wellbeing of locals. Fascinating areas to visit culturally and geographically. (Reading The Blue Nile by Alan Moorhead as a child got me hooked on the area - particlulary Sudan and Ethiopia)
