I wonder if the game characters did, or if the developers did.
I noticed they gave her a very Shelley Duvall in The Shining look but she's not as empowered, and another character a Jack-esque character arc except he is treated better... Trying not to accidentally spoil it for anyone.
it’s obvious the game is meant to erase anya. that literally happens in at least 2 scenes. reviews who say she is ignored miss the point. that was the point.
I've been looking around and am genuinely dumbfounded I've seen no articles exploring more of the corporate horror/union themes. Nobody's deep dived into the cartoons, or talked about how infatalizing their ship is, or how much the systems set them up for failure. There's so much more to analyze!
there’s a lot to write about it and lots of reddit convos on it. i didn’t want to center it because i felt the character drama was centered while the corporatism created the conditions for the tragedy. this is what i wrote
True! The system is very much set up for failure. "Why do the only the medbay and cockpit have locks?" But that's all in service to the character drama. It's got me researching stuff like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire to reflect on violence/negligence towards women and its affect on union history.
We are not a major outlet but it was important for us to have a review that actually discussed what the game was instead of refusing to discuss it bc *spoilers* - also meant a lot of our women-led editorial team to tackle editing @seamoosi.bsky.social's review.
Eric did a phenomenal job and he always wanted to make sure that he spoke about the reality the game engages with. So it was a perfect fit for us to work together. He's a fantastic writer
He is. And good on you for running something on it because God knows I tried and nobody was interested because it wasn't AAA. God forbid we write about games that have the termerity to be About Something.
I think what's fantastic is that we ran the review before that dev interview, and Eric was so thoughtful in engaging with the line "I hope it hurts" - I have two pieces this year that were a pure joy in editing and seeing the care writers put in. This is one of them.

FWIW, I think Swansea failed her *the least* and a certain plot point there makes me think he actually had a plan to help her out.
