1/2 The inaugural session not only recalled the 1975 conference but also highlighted the profound significance of the location—almost sacred—to Native Americans. IMHO, the key point is whether the SynBio-based biotech agenda of the future be driven by a humanistic vision of our interplay with nature

There is a significant gap between the many well-meaning declarations of Biotech as a tool for a better world and the harsh reality of an opportunistic, cutthroat market. Can this be changed? How 🤔

This is a societal key question, which is more pressing now than ever! We as scientists can give recommendations, individuals might take themselves out of the game, but we cannot decide! Societies at this moment seem to choose profit over everything - so I join you in asking „How?“

The 1st step in solving a problem is recognizing that it exists & making a good diagnosis if its nature. If a solution is not possible, then manage it as best we can. IMO there is an issue in Biotech re the pious narrative of societal benefit vs harsh reality of money-making. And the public sees it
