I'm not sure it was "obviously" going to be a blowout. First off, there's an incumbent disadvantage here where many people are seeking to leave the model of "big tech company controlling content distribution via algorithms on large platforms" and more focused on smaller niche communities 1/2

It is genuinely impressive to fuck the dog this badly. Threads had all the resources of Meta and both a baked in user base and social graph from their other platforms, with a competitor that was invite-only until just recently. If they’d run it minimally competently, it should have been a blowout.
