My recollection was that Heinlein (when he visited Russia) used the metric 'How long does it take for someone buying a loaf of bread, to earn the price of that loaf of bread, in take home pay?' Most employed people in the US earn the price of a loaf of bread in an hour or less.

I think i saw bread start at 50 rubles which is 50c, so they are still able to afford that, but butter and cheese and salami to put on it, which was a staple for low income people, not so much

The question was more along the lines of how long does it take someone to earn those 50 rubles. If it's longer than an hour, or even that long, it means that bread costs more in working time than a loaf of bread in the US. The fact it might not cost me more than an hour of my income doesn't help.

People usually just divide the ruble by 100. However the average monthly salary in russia is 70,000 rubles or $700 USD while in the US its $5600. So when you see a price, divide it by 100, but also multiply it by 8!
Lets begin with Vodka, cheapest is ₽319, which is $3.19 or adjusted by income $25.52

Foreign beer is pretty expensive there, so it varies between ₽64 and ₽200. Adjusted for income that's $5 to $8 per can. Jack daniels is $160. Caviar is $66 - $200. Cheese starts at $11

russian brand coke and soft drinks = $3.92

Butter and most dairy is quite expensive there, mainly due to a number of factors, such as sanctions on agriculture machinery and lack of workers. Here we see that butter starts at $14 when you adjust by income. WHich is why some supermarkets are now putting their butter in anti theft devices
