This happens when you have a stereo input but set Audacity to record to mono. If you have a signal on the left and silence on the right and mix those together, that leaves you with the signal at 50% volume (or -6dB)

Hi Leo! Thank you for the explanation! 🙏 Many voice actors have a 2-CH interface and plug their microphones into CH1. Is there a setting where Audacity could accept CH1 into a mono channel directly?
