… speaking of SNL, watched a Sky documentary last night on the writers of the show and how their week plays out (part of SNL’s 50th anniversary stuff) - really interesting and now I have greater sympathy for SNL’s general lack of quality. Frankly a surprise it has any good sketches at all …

… it’s a group of really young, really inexperienced writers working weird hours to an incredibly tight deadline and with a boss who uses divide and conquer and raw fear as management tools. Clearly a pressured and gruelling work environment and hardly conducive to fresh, well thoughtout comedy.

… one writer openly said his mental health has deteriorated while working on SNL. Another was constantly anxious about submitting anything and overall very few writers appeared to actually enjoy their job. And don’t get me started on the Monday meeting with the guest host - pure, fabricated hell.

… anyway, SNL is a low-quality show that occasionally produces a brilliant bit of comedy (see above). In that sense it’s remarkable it’s lasted so long and held in such high esteem. But what is actually remarkable is that an episode is produced every week given the challenges in making that happen.

… speaking of SNL, this is a really interesting piece by Helen Holmes for @theguardian.com on the long-standing conservatism of the show, providing further evidence that Lorne Michaels is, on the whole, a bad dude.

A show that’s been on for 50 years is naturally going to launch many careers, and really that’s its fundamental purpose - to be a breeding ground for new talent, which is also why it isn’t very good: raw comics = a lot of rubbish sketches. And that, as I outlined, is also down to how it’s produced.
