Forgive me, I don’t know the name of the guy speaking here, and in general I enjoy his appearances on Sky Sports News, but bloody hell - “second Premier League title”. Mate, it would be a TWENTIETH league title.

I guess all those people who watched football pre-1992 were wasting their money?
And when they wind up the premier league for a European league, all this seasons games won’t count either!
… it’s almost certainly because I’m getting grumpier with age, but really starting to annoy me how records in English football are now almost totally defined by what’s happened in the ‘Premier League era’. Decades of achievements - by clubs and players - being totally ignored. Frankly it’s bullshit.
… various reasons why this is the case, the most obvious and critical being how the broadcasters - Sky in particular - have framed the history of English football, namely that it essentially began in 1992, which just so happened to be when they got the broadcast rights for the top flight.
… we’ve all - myself very much included - fall in line. It’s lazy and an incredible disservice to so many. Jimmy Greaves, for instance, is never referenced now when we collectively speak about the ‘top’ goalscorers in the history of English football. That is absolutely crazy given what he achieved.
… and even for Alan Shearer, with whom all domestic goalscoring records now pretty much start, there’s a level of disrespect going on given the goals he got for Southampton are never spoken about/taken into account. He more anyone should be doing something to address that. Certainly has platform to.
… anyway, as said, it’s bullshit. And it needs addressing. A collective response required by broadcasters, the media in general, and by all of us who speak about/analyse English football and the record that have and are being set in it. Will that actually happen? Probably not.
