I really need you to spell it out for me. What is SA (sexual assault? South Africa?) Franz Ferdinand was killed and resulted in the first worldwar right?

Something Awful, once an “internet culture” board that actually had lots of great stuff but also accumulated a fringe of incel nihilists that went off to create 4chan & other nazi incubators.
this is truly an example of how insane the right wing internet reactionary movement is, because you can’t describe it and all of the lore behind it without starting to sound like a lunatic.
I love this series because it explains how to counter the arguments right wingers present but also the history. This episode in particular delves into a very good case study about online behavior and how sinister yet INSANE it is. https://youtu.be/lLYWHpgIoIw?si=8oAn2P6GlSUjWRBr
It's also a kind of weird fractal, where every part of the story is a sum of its whole: deeply fucked up, deeply stupid, and deeply funny on a very dark level. Any component (like the time /pol/ and /mlp/ were merged for an April Fool's joke into /mlpol/ and both enjoyed it) represents its total.
Actually I think the assumption that someone named Lowtax banned hentai is South Africa is the insane part. Instead of just searching "Lowtax" on the internet where we all are right now.
buddy this is really the kind of thing that the left needs to stop doing. "just google it" isn't the answer anymore; the google algorithm is so advertisement driven it's just going to send him in another direction and confuse him more. we do need to suck it up and teach sometimes.
I tried answering his question in good faith because I DO believe that this is an issue where if you haven't been chronically online enough since the late aughts/early 10s that some of what happens is insane. The video I linked here has a whole example with "loss" and "the daily dose."
I had never heard of the "daily dose" that he talks about until I watch that video, and then he showcases an example where a journalist poorly phrased a question about patreon to a lawyer who doesn't understand what it is. Saying that a combination of purple and green online is a rape joke is nuts.
I hadn't heard of it because I was never in those spaces, and you can't assume that the general public even knows those spaces exist. Go ask one of your parents what 8chan is, or what the hell the white supremacist pony is, and see how quickly they get concerned about you.
We can’t all know everything can we now? I know things always seem quite obvious when you know them but are not when you don’t. In the sentence I didn’t even realise Lowtax was a name. I thought it’s some type of lingo like „lowkey“. And searching for „sa“ on Google…good luck.
Yes, Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination resulted in World War I. There's a lot of history before & after to explain why an Austrian dying in Bosnia sent a generation of Germans and Britons killing each other in France but that was the flashpoint
Similarly, if the moderator of the site Something Awful hadn't banned hentai the disaffected members don't form 4chan, and without 4chan right-wing radicalization in the 21st century is fundamentally different from what it is now.
I don't know what we'd get in that case, but it isn't what we got.
tbh I think the real catalyst was moot attempting to create a "containment board" for politics after the disaster that was /n/ or /trv/ (I forget which). We had no way of knowing at the time, but containment boards *don't work*, they just concentrate whatever you're trying to contain, and it *leaks*

Without it maybe there's a war but not this war
I don't know what we'd get in that case, but it isn't what we got.
