I always say partner BECAUSE its gender neutral - BECAUSE it quickly identifiies ignorant people who need me to specify the gender of my partner. IT SHOULDNT MATTER.

The reason I've heard the most is "it sounds like you're business partners" which to me is such a hilariously out of touch and boomer-esque reply, I envision them thinking of a bygone era approximately around the Klondike gold rush

I was gonna say the business partner thing xD It does. OR that you don't want people to know the gender, so you don't say "Boyfriend/Girlfriend", but instead "Partner" to keep things private.
Nothing wrong with either and I don't care. Just what it sounds like to me ^^ Each to their own.

You know what, fair enough. :) Me and my well, partner, just don't like the "husband" and "wife" terms and settled on what felt more neutral and equal.

That's fine. I can absolutely see that. "Husband" and "Wife" often comes with the traditional sexist role thinking. So I respect the equality vibe :)

The irony is that to me I have never associated the word "partner" with business at all, barring perhaps law firms. "Business partner" just wasn't something I heard often enough; designating "business" imo implied that "partner" defaults to personal/romantic!

And now that I say that I remember the word "partner" being used in grade school often amongst students, like lab partner, study partner/buddy, etc. So I think it was drilled in me much earlier.

I watch so many law/advocate shows, so that might be where it comes from actually xD Hahah.
If "Partner" comes up in a conversation, I'm always not 100% sure what they mean, but I choose to default to life partner and not...their name on a wall 😂
