Exactly. It's a civil marriage, and not something a church is involved in.

The Catholic Church doesn't marry divorced people either, but they don't try to make it illegal for non-Catholics.

No. Not even socially. It was known unknown. A cultural Schrodinger's cat. Or the Monkey experiment. Where the bananas are at the top of the ladder. After a while it becomes a known unknown to not climb the ladder.
