It’s an interesting time compression thing. Like WoW being 20 makes “sense” but it also absolutely does not feel like the midway point between the NES and now. I think it redefined a lot of gaming culture in such a way that it feel likes it’s been around longer. (And the RTS games were!)
I get what you mean, I'm 30 and I had an obsessive 6 month stint of playing it when I was around 12-14. I don't remember its launch so at that time for me it felt like the game had always existed.
No, definitely feels longer. Definitely feels like an Internet rock. Celebrated, derided, rediscovered, discarded, again and again, but. It's still there. Just a big ol rock on the beach looking out over the sea that is the Internet.
I think it's the fact that Warcraft was a thing before the MMO? You had name recognition before the live service was a thing; which then exploded during formative internet years.
Wish I did interact more with so I could justify spending the money on this set:
I remember being in an addictions class in undergrad. We had to do a mock AA/NA type group and pick an addiction to talk about. This guy started talking about WOW. Most of the class didn't know what the hell he was talking about.
