Depending on where you live, you can plant grass that is native and doesn't need to be watered or mowed. I'm putting a sedge lawn in this spring similar to this.

Interesting. Sedge looks like a pretty tall grass, I'm surprised that you wouldn't need to mow it. Personally, my neighborhood is wooded, the HOA is chill af, and my wife is on the board, so I've got no worries.

I'm going to plant a few different types but none will get longer than about 6" You can mow if you want but I like how they look without. The advantage is they need a lot less water, stabilize the soil, and create a native habitat.

Yeah, it's insane. The time, money, and effort they put in so it "looks nice". Most people with lawns don't even play sports, or frolic, or whatever in them.

Me too, but my husband won’t give it up. I’m just eating away at it, enlarging the mulched space under our trees every year, and planting more big trees and understory plants.

HOA can fine you, and even put a lien on your home… if you live where there is an HOA, you chose the responsibility of caring for a lawn.

Good to explore what shrub bed options there are though. This is usually a better way to get native plants into your yard while dealing with HOA restrictions

Yeah, I'm aware of the power of some HOAs and agree that some form of native garden is better than none. The intent of the poem is to inspire those who live with a restrictive HOA to get involved with the HOA and push to relax the restrictions.
