The PS1 Namco Museums are genuinely some of the coolest gaming history preservation releases of all time. I bought a few volumes of it for my PS3 years back just to walk around those virtual museums (and play Mappy and Druaga ofc).

It's a genuine shame that Namco abandoned this format for later Namco Museums, when it's actually something that would be much more viable on current platforms, since they'd be able to store much higher quality scans of the items in the museum.

Yeah, absolutely. I've been hoping for years now that Namco would announce a new version as so much could be done with them now.

I'd settle for something with the care of Atari 50 but few of the storied Japanese companies seem interested in showcasing their history much.

God, I'd kill for a Namco Atari 50.
Namco is actually one of the better companies in terms of keeping their older games accessible (finding out you could buy Bosconian on Switch made me so happy), but yeah, they're not interested in keeping the *history* around the games accessible.

Atari 50 is genuinely (imo) the coolest preservation centric release of all time (they even released the Jaguar emulator for free!), and something with that care and attention put toward some of Japanese gaming history would be insane.

I do still think modern Namco Museums are cool, especially the Archives releases, because the Famicom ports are amazing and incredibly historically significant to gaming history. The new NES ports are a nice bonus too, to be sure.

I also have a fondness for the DS release, simply because of the tate mode support, but no later Namco Museum recaptured the sheer magic of those PS1 releases. They're not emulation, from my understanding (I think the aspect ratio is the big tell), but bespoke, arcade accurate ports.

Aww, yeah, the DS one is lovely! I do enjoy seeing the games themselves getting ports with care, but yeah, still hoping against hope for a new virtual museum ;; And yeah, they're not, programmed especially for the museums.

Oh! if you have access to VRChat, someone as rather sweetly recreated the Museum environments in much higher quality and they're about the closest right now to modern recreations.

I had to check just now and yep, the person who ported the 3D portions of 1 and 2 to VRChat uploaded 3 since the last time I checked!! I gotta go later. the first 2 were great!
