Saw them play their first stateside gig in San Francisco, 2005 or so. They booked a tiny 21+ club in SoMa, having no idea that they could have filled any hall in town with thousands of screaming nerds. You could hear the howls of teen otaku rage all up and down the west coast.

The folks who ran the club were blitzed with complaints. In a time where anime fan culture wasn't widely understood yet, they had no idea what was going on. I remember the posting on their website. "Did we just book the Britney Spears of indie rock? What is going on here?"

Seventeen years later I saw them play Club Quattro in Hiroshima and reflected that many of the kids in the crowd hadn't been born yet when I went to that first gig. Funny thing, getting old.
