That is a folk etymology and unserious. If you actually check m-w's entry for "pussy", you'll see that it's considered more likely to descend from an Old Germanic word, as evidenced by cognates in other Germanic languages, e.g. Norse "pΕ«ss" (pocket), and Low German "pusΔ" (vulva).
Also at that entry, all the way at the end: βAnd despite what you may have heard, pusillanimous does not serve as the basis for pussyfoot, pussycat, or a certain related vulgarism.β
