Your approach uses the default Python sqlite wrapper, which unfortunately dumps Sqlite3's busy error into the generic OperationalError. Which means it won't handle loads like Rail's implementation can.

I suggest using another wrapper. I suggest apsw, but AFAIK there isn't a Django connector yet.

I have anecdotal evidence that APSW is faster and has less write lock errors. In fact, after switching to APSW recently I stopped getting write lock errors altogether.

Granted, my loads haven't been huge yet, but w/sqlite on good pragma settings I was getting write lock errors under modest loads

I plan on replicating the benchmark in https://blog.pecar.me/django-sqlite-benchmark to see how it goes.

Building an APSW adapter for Django is probably not high on my todo list unfortunately. 😅

An advantage of APSW is that you can change the retry algorithm. That's what the Rails team does, as they found it means less orphans if they use a 1ms delay rather than an exponential retry.

However, this is for the 1% use case. For most projects I don't think it matters. 😁

Curious to compare https://grantjenks.com/docs/diskcache/tutorial.html#djangocache vs the SQLite setup I have. It might be less of a hassle to setup at least.
