It is sad. It's interesting though when you look into it, the large number of artists who have achieved a certain level of fame, that lived with some form of mental illness. Which makes their success even greater.
Perfectionists always suffer. Couple that with the rejections that are often part & parcel of careers in the arts & it's a recipe for heightened vulnerability.

Me too. And often think of what he must have gone through. Wasn't it Robin Williams who said that depressed people aren't pretending to be depressed, they're pretending to be okay?
He came into my store and no one recognized him. I helped him and after I said βI just wanted to say Iβm a big fan of your work Mr Williams. Thank youβ he took my hands in his βthank *you*. You have a wonderful day, Miss.β and he left. And a few months later he was gone. It hit me pretty hard
