Au contraire! They are being actively (re)introduced as replacements to stiles. They are more accessible both for humans and anyone who has tried to portage a great, lumbering Labrador over a stile without a suitable dog-gate. The Cotswold Voluntary Wardens do a lot of great work in this regard.

What does 'sallow' mean here? I'm only familiar with that word meaning of sickly complexion, unhealthy-looking. Willow trees are salix ... any connection?

The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin. So if you are of a sallow complexion you might need some willow bark.

Yes, I knew about salicylic acid aka aspirin (found in beaver glands) but never made the connection with ‘sallow’ as a noun rather than the common adjective. Thanks!
