I don't know, if the weaker man can kill the more powerful man with a thrown weapon, both become equal in power; even if the majority tried to find relative safety by aligning themselves with the more powerful. Don't you think ?

I thought I understood that there was a difference between civil war and "war of all against all": the first is relatively organized (in faction, party, religion, etc.) while in the second, everyone can be a danger to everyone else - for no reason. Not sure I read that right!
I think I was talking about the historical context of Leviathan rather than a close reading of the text . I take it the all against all thing is what inspired the nasty, brutish and short description . I only read certain books of Hobbes ; partly because I changed courses early on in one term...
