I've always considered word count to be the least useful metric for progress in writing. Discovery, on the other hand? That can thrill you the way seeing a wolf in the wild can, right?

It’s true, and I think a time count is probably more useful—that you know you put the time in, even if the words didn’t come. Still, I usually make note of my word count when I’m drafting.
