Reagan also gutted the ATC union which was mostly Vietnam vets. Air traffic controllers were never able to get fully staffed again.
The vets were battle hardened under high pressure situations

My family despised Reagan, especially since my dad worked for the FAA as an ATC before the strike. Yeah, the revisionist history about what a transformative president Reagan was always baffles me since he laid the very groundwork in government for where we find ourselves here today.

I remember that well. We lived near the Texas State Hospital, which at that time was home to 2000+ long term mental patients. Many were given bus tickets to Houston with appointments for outpatient counselors. Either they couldn’t or would not adapt and mostly lived in the bus station for weeks
