It’s the NATO provision that essentially states that an attack against one member state is an attack against all. That said, if one ally attacks another (as has almost happened between Greece and Turkey) the “attacking ally” gets trounced by the others.
I think it also should be added to the explanation that NATO article 5 only have been issued once before, USA declared it after 9/11, and then we all showed up to fight "war on terror" together. I think americans should remember that.
